World titles glory for Warsop & Mansfield TAGB

Six members of Warsop and Mansfield TAGB came home with medals from the World Taekwondo Championships, held in Birmingham Arena.

Five students and the club’s assistant instructor, Danny Gammond, all brought back a rich haul of medals with Adam Lee Evans, of Warsop, ending up a double world champion, Yvonne Sansom-Savage and Kenjiro Evans also landing world titles.

Club instructor AJ Haynes-Ward said: “I’m extremely delighted and proud of all of my students who work and train extremely hard for these type of results.

“They show great dedication and club pride and always give above and beyond everything asked of them.

“These is the second time our students have attended the worlds.

“It’s held in the UK every two years so is definitely a must attend if you have the opportunity.

“We have also previously won Welsh,Scottish and British national titles at our club consistently annually.”

Adam Lee Evans came home with two golds and became double world champion in Cadet Male Strike pad hand and foot. Adam is also a regular competitor who always places in the top three.

Yvonne Sansom-Savage, from Warsop, entered the Sparring/Patterns and Ultimate Strike Pad Hand and Foot categories.

She came home with bronze in ladies’ heavyweight Sparring, silver in Strike Pad Foot, gold Strike Pad Hand as well as Grand Slam champion strike pad.

Yvonne has attended and won numerous competitions nationally and locally.

Kenjiro Evans, husband and father to Helen and Adam, became Grand Slam world champion for the Strike Pad event while also getting gold for Individual Male Hand Strike and silver for Men’s Foot Strike. Ken is a consistent medal winner at national and local events.

Helen Evans is from Warsop and entered ladies Hand Strike Pad and received a bronze medal by placing third.

She has overcome medical issues to compete, never fails to give 100 per cent and regularly attends competitions where she has won previous medals.

Rebecca Beresford, from Sutton, entered Junior Girls U11s Sparring and Patterns and won silver in Sparring and also got bronze in the Junior Hand Strike Pad event.

Rebecca is also a national medalist who competes regularly at nationwide events and places consistently in the top three.

A regular national competitor and official, Danny Gammond came second in the Grand Slam event and came home with a silver medal despite officiating at the event over both days.

Warsop & Mansfield TAGB sessions are based at Meden Vale Village Hall, Shirebrook Leisure Centre and River Maun Leisure Centre, Mansfield.

The club is 20 years old and Sutton’s AJ Haynes-Ward, a 35-year-old 3rd Dan black belt, have been the instructor for the last four years.

“I have been doing TaeKwondo for over 20 years and was taught by the club’s previous instructor Mr John Whitton who retired four years ago allowing me to continue the clubs great journey over the years,” he said.

“I myself am also the current reigning regional champion for Men’s Black Belt Destruction for two years consecutively. I have also won national titles in previous years.

“Our next competitions will be the North Midlands and the British Championships, which are held in September and November respectively, which we will of course be attending with greater numbers and really hope the local community come along to show their support.”
