Wet start to new Mansfield League cricket season

The Mansfield & District Cricket League got off to a wet start on Saturday rain making an impact on five of the seven games.

In Section One Denby entertained Kirkby Portland, who made just 129-9 with A. Alison (41 not out) and J. Wilson, for Denby, taking 3-36 from 36 overs.

Section Three saw Welbeck score 209-5 declared after 32 overs and almost pull off a win over Alfreton, who made 142-8 in 36 overs. For Welbeck, D. Hunt scored 104 and S. Harper took 4-16 with the ball.

In the Alfreton innings M. Roove scored 42 and was backed up by J. Evans scoring 38 before rain finally ended the match.

In Section Four Wirksworth & Middleton batted first and made 94-6 against Papplewick & Linby before this match was abandoned after 32 overs.

Ashover were at home to Sheffield Transport in Section Five and fired 108-6 in 28 overs before the match was abandoned. William Saxton scored 45 and Andy Messer took 3-30.

Also in this section Anston II (141) lost to Wednesday (142-4) by six wickets.

In Section Six at Clowne, Teversal II had time to make 115-3 from 23 overs, C. Else 59 (not out) and J. Land 41 before the rain came down.

At Milkin Lane: ASHOVER II (6) 108-6 (William Saxton 45* Andy Messer 3-30) v SHEFFIELD TRANSPORT (6) - rain stopped play 27.4 overs.

At Ryton Road: ANSTON II (3) 141 lost to WEDNESDAY (20) 142-4 by six wickets.


At Christchurch Meadows: BELPER MEADOWS v MANSFIELD II - no result received.

At The Pavillion: TEVERSAL II (6) 115-3 (C. Else 59*, J. Land 41) v CLOWNE TOWN (6) - rain stopped play 22.5 overs.
