VIDEO: Kirkby powerlifting legend Phil retires on top
Kirkby’s legendary powerlifter Phil Beniston has just returned from this year’s World Championships in Holland with three more world titles – and then announced his retirement.
The 50-year old has won 21 world titles and broken over 200 British, European and world records in that time, including over 50 world records.
Although finished with powerlifting as a competitor, Phil will compete one more time in next year’s World Bench Press Championships to see if he can go out on a high as bench press world champion for a 10th consecutive year.

Hide AdHe will then concentrate on refereeing and coaching as well as his other sport of kickboxing.
