TSCA Swords sharp at Aldershot Open

Under coach Miroslaw Poplawski, club member Sam Boyle came away with a bronze medal.

Sam is now part of the British Fencing Talent Pathway programme.
Patrick Carey, one of the club’s younger members, in his first Open competition came away with a credible finish ranked 62 out of 81.

Patrick was one of the youngest competitors on the competitions and won many individual fights during the day.

In the women’s epee competition Agata Poplawska was unfortunate to go out of the direct elimination in an early round, finishing 18th overall, but managed to refocus and went on to win the ladies’ plate competition.

The club was also delighted to see Hannah Walsh, one of their fencers who has recently left, win the prize for the best finish for an Army entrant.

All in all this was a good day for TSCA Swords and excellent preparation for the national British Fencing cadet and junior completion coming up in the spring.

TSCA operates on Tuesday evenings during term-time in the sports hall of Samworth Church Academy at Sherwood Hall Road, Juniors (U13): 5.45-7.15pm, Seniors (over 13): 7-8pm, and on Thursdays at Vision West Nottinghamshire College, Derby Road, juniors and seniors 6-9pm.

The club was formed in September 2010 through the efforts of Norman Randall and Miroslaw Poplawski – both of whom had been working closely with Samworth delivering fencing training to the Academy’s students and staff.

They now have a membership age range from eight upwards from novices to experienced fencers.
