Tri Club juniors show programme is working well

Mansfield Triathlon Club youngsters belied their age to enjoy success at the Southwell Triathlon.

The club fielded four junior relay teams, taking second, third, fourth and fifth place in category.

It was a significant first for the club with 12 junior members representing the club in an adult sprint distance race.

The achievement was the culmination of the club’s junior to adult transition programme funded by Nottinghamshire County Council’s Community Sports Fund.

The programme was designed to prepare older juniors for the greater distances and speeds associated with adult races.

Club secretary and coach Claire Allison said: “It has taken over a year of hard work by the athletes, coaches and parents to achieve this excellent result.

“We’ve put on special training sessions, including open water swimming, tougher running drills and speed and endurance cycling sessions and they’ve really paid off.”

In swim, bike, run order, the four teams consisted of: Callum Bailey, Joe Orgill and Jamie Parkin; Emelia Osborne, Chris Green and Isaac Moodie; Will Melhuish, Nathan Roome and George Smith and, George Pidding, Cormac Allison and Callum Ball.

The four teams completed the course in 1 hour, 3 mins and 5 secs, 1 hour 3 mins and 28 secs, 1 hour 5 mins and 36 sces and 1 hour, 7 mins and 49 secs respectively.

The club was also represented by a large cohort of adults.

First up for the club was Steve Melhuish in 1 hour, 1 min and 3 secs followed by Chris Shooter in 1 hour, 1 min and 51 secs.

Jordan Boam finished in 1 hour, 2 mins and 2 secs for second in category with Scott Tilley and Chris Clarke coming home in 1 hour, 3 mins and 39 secs and 1 hour, 6 mins and 57 secs.

Completing the club’s line up were Steve Monaghan (1 hour, 10 mins and 51 secs), Andy Ball (1 hour, 14 mins and 21 secs), Mark Wlaker (1 hour, 15 mins and 45 secs) and Michael Bird (1 hour, 24 mins and 31 secs).

Nigel Paylor was the club’s sole representative in the Full Boar sprint distance triathlon. He completed the challenging course in just 1 hour, 28 mins and 29 secs.

The club was busy over the weekend of the Nottingham Triathlon and Outlaw Half.

The Outlaw half consists of a 1.2 mile swim and 56 mile cycle followed by a half-marathon run (13.1 miles).

Seven athletes turned out for the club and Steve Riggott was first home for the club in 4 hours and 40 mins followed by Ian Conn in 5 hours and 21 mins.

Lorraine Garvey finished in 5 hours and 34 mins with Paul Tibble in 5 hours and 42 mins and Nigel Paylor in 5 hours and 53 mins. Dan Wilson finished in 6 hours and 9 mins closely followed by John Mason in 6 hours and 21 mins.

In the Nottingham Triathlon Chris Holmes was first home for the club, completing the 750m swim, 20k bike and 5k run in 1 hour, 5 mins and 22 secs with Steve Monaghan finishing in 1 hour, 17 mins and 35 secs.

Meanwhile, Deborah Kerry and her husband Mark completed the London to Paris charity bike ride to raise money and awareness for the Nottingham organisation Harmless, which provides life-saving support for people who self harm.

They cycled 300 miles from Crystal Palace London to Paris in just four days.

So far they have raised £600 and are hoping to add to that total.
