Taylor leads local charge at regional championships

Local swimmers began their regional championship campaigns in impressive fashion, taking a gold and a bronze at the first in a series of weekends of intense competition for swimmers across the combined East and West Midlands and North East Regions.

Swimming with the Nova Centurion squad and opening the SRS Leisure 2015 Midland Championships with the gruelling distance events, Mansfield Swimming Club’s Rhys Taylor led the local charge taking gold and Midland Regional Champion title in the Boys’ 15yrs 1500m freestyle in a winning time of 16.49.01 while Sutton Swimming Club’s Neve Fergie followed him onto the podium after taking a superb bronze in the Girls’ 16yrs 800m freestyle, touching in 9:33.40.

Mansfield SC’s Ben Sharrocks placed 11th in the Boys’ 15yrs 1500m freestyle in a time of 17:52.61, Sutton SC’s Ruslan Golubs placed sixth in the Boys’ 16yrs 1500m freestyle in 17:34.13 and Sutton SC’s Chloe Quinn completed the local Nova Centurion representation placing seventh overall in the Girls’ 11/12yrs 800m freestyle in a time of 10:27.36.

The next series of events sees the best regional swimming talent in the 15 years and above age groups descend on Corby and Sunderland for a packed programme of events to determine both individual and team regional honours.

The Regional Championships also double up as selection events for the new British and Home Nations Summer Championship events being held in July and August.

A strong contingent of local swimmers are competing including Ben Canavan-Taylor and Sam Murden (Falcon SC), Brendan O’Keefe (Mansfield SC), Ben Sharrocks, Charlotte Baguley, Charlotte Henshaw, Chloe Peach, Declan Smith, Holly Whitehead, Imogen Gould, Jade Young, Joseph Schenk, Lauren Quinn, Lewis Steptoe, Neve Fergie, Oliver Hynd, Rhys Taylor, Sophie Bunker and Tom Howarth (Nova Centurion SC), Elliot Clogg (City of Sheffield Swim Squad), Emily Waldram, Jade Clarke and Kirsten Pinson (Sherwood Colliery SC) and Sam Creak and Sargon Yousefi-Titche (Sutton SC).

The final weekends of competition being hosted in Coventry for the Midlands region and Sheffield for the North East region at the end of May/beginning-June will see the 11-14-year-olds battle it out for equivalent age group regional medals and honours.
