Sutton second as Worksop fight back

Sutton Harriers had started off the season spectacularly by winning the first meeting of the 2013/14 Nottinghamshire Sportshall League, but they were unable to fend off a strong Worksop Harriers team, who won the remaining four matches.

This led to Sutton Juniors finishing in second place, just 20 points adrift of Worksop.

The U11 girls team of Emily Allcock, Emily Cawkwell, Mia De-Lucis, Sarah Fairweather, Anne-Marie Herbert, Libby Keeton, Chantelle Mitchell, Chloe Norman, Kelsey Pearce, Gracie Pemberton, Danielle Roe, Isabelle Skelton, Sophie Taylor, Freya Walton and Lily West started off the season with the first win and, after a very close competition with the other six clubs, finished the season in fourth place, just two points off third.

U11 boys Joseph Jefferies, Harry Jones, Ellis Moakes and Charlie Norman finished the season in seventh place. This very young team, most in only their first year of competition, put in some good performances, but with only once being able to field enough athletes to provide a relay team, this meant scoring opportunities were missed.

A strong U13 girls team saw them winning four out of the five meetings, narrowly missing out by only five points at the last match.

Joely Ball, Chloe Gillicker, Abigail Granger, Rebecca Johns, Olivia Jones, Felicia Miloro, Amy Peart-Roddis, Alex Roe, Amelia Sewell, Martina Thorpe, Courtney Williams and Andie and Megan Woodhouse worked well together and used all of their experience to bring their team home in first place, 11 and a half points ahead of their rivals.

After being second in the first match the U13 boys team of Samuel Bradley, Matthew Brown, Benjamin Blythe, Joe Gerrard, Robert Lounds, Oliver Meyrick , Cameron Rawson and Niall Stringer were determined to go one better.

This very strong team pulled together and won all four successive matches to take the U13 Boys title as champions. They were also unbeaten in the relays.

With two of the U15 Girls team only competing once during the season, this meant that many of the scoring opportunities were unfilled.

Despite this, Drew Alletson, Erin Bowmar, Bethany Herbert and Rimini Miloro finished the year taking a well deserved fourth place.

The victorious U15 Boys team of David Allcock, Callum Ball, William Bradley, Ben Burnham, Samuel Moakes and Leo Tang won 19 of the 30 events on offer during the season, including every relay race. Their commitment to their team was outstanding, earning them a victory at every meeting and taking the title of Nottinghamshire Under 15 Boys champions by a massive 79 and a half points.

During the season Athlete of the Match Awards were awarded to Rebecca Johns, Joe Gerrard and William Bradley, William also receiving the highest accolade of Male Athlete of the Year.

Following on from these competitions, four of Sutton’s U11 athletes were selected to represent Nottinghamshire in the Fun in Athletics Regional Final, the girls second and boys third.

Fifteen of the U13 and U15 athletes were also called up to represent Nottinghamshire in the East Midlands Regional Sportshall Final.

Strong Derbyshire teams saw both U13 teams and the U15 Girls team finish in second place whilst the U15 Boys beat off strong competition to become regional champions.
