Sutton SC start season in style with Top Club award at Dukeries Open

Sutton Swimming Club started the new season in fine style by winning the Top Club award at the 29th Dukeries Open Meet held at the 50m pool, Ponds Forge, Sheffield.

This Open Meet attracted swimmers from all over the country including teams from North, East, South and West Yorkshire, Lancashire, West Midlands, Derbyshire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire and Nottinghamshire amongst others.

In total swimmers from 45 swimming clubs participated. The top swimmers in each event and for each age group secured Club points which were all added together at the end of the competition.

Sutton SC secured a massive 499 points to win this award, with Worksop SC finishing in second place with 455 points and Bilston SC of Wolverhampton third overall with 292 points.

Sutton’s team consisted of 17 boys and 20 girls who between them won an impressive haul of 167 individual awards consisting of 10 first place trophies, five second place trophies, 10 third place trophies, eight fourth place medals, six fifth place medals and six sixth place medals.

All of Sutton’s team contributed to the overall success, but the star performer for on the day was be 13-year-old Neve Fergie, who not only won all four of her individual events, but also won the Top 13-year- old girl award for securing the most BAGCAT points from a single event.

Incredibly, Neve also reached the Open Age Group Skins 50m freestyle final in which she secured a fantastic runners-up medal.

Other Sutton swimmers reaching the Skins finals were Lauren Quinn, Sophie Bunker and Sam Creak. Lauren Quinn also won the Top 14-year-old girl award for the most BAGCAT points from a single event.

Sutton’s relay teams also enjoyed success with the Girl’s 14-year-old team of Lauren Quinn, Chloe Peach, Sophie Bunker and Neve Fergie winning gold in both the 4x50m free and 4x50m medley relays.

The Boys’ 10-year-old team won bronze in both the free and medley relays, the Girls 10-year-old team won silver medals in both the free and medley relays, the Boys’ 12-year-old team won a silver in the medley relay and the Boys’ 14-year-old team won silver medals in both the free and medley relays.

Boys representing Sutton were: Connor Marsh, Adam Hudson, William Darrington, Jake Hudd, Jason Lai, Aaron Lee, Matthew Woodhall, Owen Harding, Joshua Leeson, Jim Fergie, Daniel Johnston, Lewis Potter, Daniel Best, Sam Creak, Liam Best, Giovanni Balanur and Liam Marsh.

Sutton club girls on duty at Sheffield were Nicola Peach, Chloe Quinn, Mia Fergie, Sophie Bunker, Jasmine Lai, Lauren Dobbs, Nicole Lai, April Ward, Ellie Bunker, Ellethea Hawley, Nell Polley, Flora Lai, Lauren Morley, Chloe Peach, Lara Prosser, Ellie Varley, Neve Fergie, Lauren Quinn, Tammy Chamberlain and Ellie Read.
