Sutton-in-Ashfield youngsters retain Sportshall championship crown

Sutton-in-Ashfield Harriers and Athletics Club's junior contingent are celebrating after a terrific season which saw them retain their Nottinghamshire Sportshall League Champions title.

After winning all five matches during the season the Sutton team held on to their first place by a massive 337 points over their rivals from Worksop, Rushcliffe, Notts, Newark, Mansfield and Retford clubs.

The team, ranging in youngsters from age nine to 14, also picked up trophies for winning four of the age group categories.

During the season, Athlete of the Match awards for outstanding performances went to Rebecca Johns, Jacob Yorke, Jared Bailey and Cameron Rawson.

Along with taking the overall title, Joe Gerrard was awarded the Under-15 Boys Shot Trophy for the longest throw and under-13 Jared Bailey was justly rewarded for his achievements and picked up the Male athlete of the Year Trophy.

Following on from their success in the League, 22 of the talented Sutton athletes were selected to represent Nottinghamshire in the East Midlands Regional Final at the Meres Leisure Centre, Grantham, competing against teams from Leicestershire and Rutland, Derbyshire, Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire.

Performances by under-11 girls Keira MacShannon, Katie and Mia Plume, Imogen Gillicker and Charlotte Vickers saw their team secure a third-place finish, with Keira and Katie achieving new personal bests in the Standing Long Jump and Standing Triple Jump respectively.

On the track both Katie and Mia were a part of the winning Obstacle Relay team, with Keira also storming to victory in the two-lap relay.

Imogen and Charlotte were instrumental in helping their team to second places, Imogen in the Over/ Under Relay and Charlotte in the Grand Prix.

Thomas Budd, Luke Hudd, Jacob Yorke and Jae Corbett were Suttons representatives in the Under-11 boys’ team with Luke achieving a new personal best in the Standing Long Jump and Jacob securing second in the Foam Javelin with a throw of 18m.

Luke was then joined by Jae and Thomas to compete as a team over the High Stepper, taking victory, with Thomas recording the fastest time of the day.

There was also success in the under-13 girls team for Ellie Cartwright, jumping to a new personal best of 6.11m in the standing triple jump.

Isabelle Skelton’s performance in the four-lap track race heats saw her rewarded with a place in the final where she finished second and Caitlin Elliott stormed to victory with a fantastic run in the six-lap Time Trials.

The under-13 boys were represented by Jared Bailey, Will Fairweather, Conor Bowskill and Zack McGrory, their performances helping their team to second place.

Rebecca Johns, Amy Peart-Roddis, Sam Fairweather, Joe Gerrard, Cameron Rawson and Ashley Budd competed in both the under-15 Individual and Team competitions.

Both girls were delighted with their performances, Rebecca equalling her personal best of 60cm in the Vertical High Jump and Amy adding an extra 11cms to her Standing Long Jump personal best to finish joint-seconnd.

There was new personal bests abounded for the boys, Joe in the Shot, Ashley in the Speed Bounce and Cameron in both the Standing Long Jump and Speed Bounce where he was also rewarded with first place.

Sam was delighted to gain new personal bests in the Shot and Standing Triple Jump and ran to victory in the two-lap race.

Individually, he was the highest-placed Nottinghamshire under-15 Boy, just missing out on a top-three place, finishing fourth.

The girls’ team finished third with the Boys’ finishing in second.
