Sting hold on for win over Warriors

Sutton Sting held off late pressure to secure a 4-3 victory against the Whitley Warriors in the National League North Moralee Conference last weekend.

The Sting’s hopes were boosted with a team of 20 icing, including new signings, former Sutton player Matt Jeffcock and Jon Woolhouse.

However, Sutton were rocked in the first minute as Warriors’ captain Jamie Tinsley put a goal past Zimozdra.

But Sting held their heads high just 42 seconds later as John Ross put one past the Warriors’ defence to even out the score.

Then at 2.59 import Ivo Celar assisted Shaun Ashton’s goal to put the Sting in the lead at 2-1.

But a thrilling end-to-end game then saw Warriors’ Craig Johnson again even up the game by the end of the first period.

Just one minute into the second period it was Sting import Vjaleslavs Movko who found the back of the net with an assist coming from earlier scorer Ross.

The Sting worked hard and kept at it as Movko found the net again just six minutes later with assistance from captain James Goodman to put Sutton in charge 4-2 up by the second break.

Sting knew that the Warriors would come out hard to try to rescue the game and would have to match the same intensity to keep hold of what they had.

However, Callum Watson found a gap and took it to make the score 4-3 and keep the result in the balance.

With a time out called from Whitley with just one minute 15 seconds to go, they pulled their goalie for a final push with no reward as Sutton held on.

Sting are back at home this Sunday with a 4.15pm face-off against Solway Sharks.

Sharks currently sit second in the Moralee Conference table and beat Sutton 3-1 two weeks ago in a league clash but went down 4-3 last weekend against the Peterborough Phantoms in cup action.
