Southwell triple test for AP McCoy

Although the field sizes are relatively small, tomorrow afternoon’s (Tuesday) seven race fixture at Southwell will still be one to enjoy.

Nineteen-time champion jockey AP McCoy is coming to the track for three rides after breaking his former boss Martin Pipe’s record of 4,191 winners on Saturday at Market Rasen when lifting home favourite It’s A Gimme to win the Summer Plate.

His first ride is for Irish trainer Peter Croke aboard My Betty in the mares novices hurdle at 3.15, who arguably recorded a personal best when third at Uttoxeter last time out and will certainly be popular with punters.

Next up for ‘The Champ’ is a ride for Jonjo O’Neill with She’s Late in the feature hurdle race at 4.45.

She has been quite frustrating since moving from the Flat to go over timber but is having her first start in handicap company this time, which could bring about some further spark.

However, she has to take on recent course and distance winner Hi Tide, who will be ridden again by Aiden Coleman who gave him such a fantastic ride here on Family Fun Day last time.

Finally AP will ride likely favourite Ozzy Thomas in the closing National Hunt Flat Race, who won his only start at Worcester when getting up close home under AP once again.

As for the rest of the card, there are a few recent winners at the course coming back for another bite of the cherry.

In the opening race, Wither Yenot, a winner over hurdles on one of the track’s music evenings earlier this summer on his penultimate start, has a go over the larger obstacles for the first time.

He will be piloted once again by young amateur Max Kendrick, who has partnered him on all his starts to date.

In the three mile handicap hurdle later on, Moon Melody, who hosed up on Family Fun Day for trainer Mike Sowersby, has a seven pound penalty to carry for that success but must go pretty close again, despite having to take on the likes of Perfect Timing, Jawaab and Galley Slave.

Prices for the meeting tomorrow start from £12.

Coming up at Southwell also is their season’s feature raceday, Ladies Day on Sunday, 17th August, for more details go to www.southwell-racecourse.co.uk or call 01636 814481.
