Sherwood youngsters boost trophy cabinet

They may be young, but Sherwood Colliery Swimming Club’s nine-15-year-olds lacked nothing in terms of quality with their winning performances at the Tony Holmes Memorial Sprint Meet, hosted by Nottingham Leander SC at Beechdale Leisure Centre.

There were a host of impressive individual displays from the youngsters, all aged between nine and 15 years, with some of them experiencing their first taste of open meet competition.

Abbie Scott (11) led the Sherwood charge, winning all of her events - 100m individual medley, 50m breaststroke, 50m butterfly, 50m freestyle and 50m backstroke - to bring home five coveted trophies and earning herself the prestigious Top Girl award.

Away from the Sprint Meet, Sherwood’s older squad members aged 12 and under to 18 made it three wins out of three in the Spring series of the Notts ASA Stage 3 League, with Sherwood A taking the League Champions title with 201 points ahead of runners-up Nottingham Leander on 197, Sutton SC 157, Mansfield A 138, Calverton & Bingham 112 and Arnold 94.

In the final of a three gala series held at Water Meadows, and having had to settle for the runners-up spot in 2013, the black and gold colours dominated from the outset where the first and second places kept coming and didn’t stop.
