Selston can't capitalise on top two slipping up

In what has been a closely ran contest all season long, current leaders Dunkirk have established some daylight between themselves and the chasing pack going into the final weeks of the campaign.

They could only draw with Graham Street Prims in midweek but Selston were unable to close the gap, which now stands at 11 points with two games in hand over the table toppers.

The Parishioners had made a good start to the game with Aylestone, who were reduced to 10 men before the break, but the home side were unable to capitalise and the visitors returned to Leicestershire with all three points.

Following a decent start to the half, Selston brought pressure on themselves and Aylestone duly capitalised.

A soft free-kick given away on the dge of the box was the first sign of Selston not being quite at the races, but the free kick was easily collected by Baldwin in the home goal.

Just two minutes later, however, the visitors took advantage of more sloppy play by the home side. The ball was given away cheaply in midfield and Jason Lee did well to drift past the home defence and finish brilliantly from a tight angle to put his side one up.

Despite some good play – one move involving Jamie Renshaw and Carl Moore left Elliott Jones to tap home but the striker was offside – and several half chances Selston never really threatened the away goal.

They were thrown a lifeline when Lee blotted his copy book and was sent off.

The home side did show intent from the kick off with skipper Ben Moore, reading a through ball very well and driving into the right hand channel and squaring unselfishly for Carl Moore to stroke home from five yards to level the game.

But that was the best of the half for the home side as they failed to take advantage of the extra man. In fact Ayleston looked good on the counter with Goncalo Santos looking dangerous with his pace and trickery.

Santos duly put his side in front with a wonderous strike from 25 yards that Baldwin had no chance of saving.

Selston did fashion two late chances but Jones volleyed over from six yards and then from the edge of the box.

Even a second player from Aylestone being dismissed didn’t give the home side enough impetus to go on and take something from the match.
