Records tumble as Anthony powers to lifting title

Kirkby powerhouse Anthony Spalding (23) broke three world records on his way to victory in the European Power Lifting Championships at Butts Arena in Coventry.

Anthony, who works at Kirkby Festival Hall, was competing in the junior 110kg category in only his third ever tournament against lifters from as far away as Russia and India.

First up was the Squats with Anthony’s first weight at 215kg and the second at 225kg a new world record. He attempted 230kg in his third but couldn’t quite make it

Next was the Chest Press and attempts at 125kg and 130kg were completed, however, an attempt at a personal best of 135kg was just too much

Last up was the Deadlifting and Anthony’s strongest area of the competition.

The current European and world record of 222.5kg was well within Anthony’s capabilities and his starting weight of 250kg broke that record on the first attempt.

He then went on to break it a further two times at weights of 260kg and then 265kg.

At 265kg Anthony’s hands were ripping up, but he was given the chance to go for 270kg which he did.

He lifted well and it was only the skin pulling from his hands that meant he didn’t complete the rep.

With his great lifts it meant he set a new European and world record for the overall points total.
