RACELINE: TIP OF THE DAY

It’s the second day of Aintree’s early-season meeting. Let’s hope we can get off to a good start with this fancy:

Sunday October 28

VENDOR

Aintree 1.10 WIN

Today looks set to be a highly productive day for trainer Alan King. Deciding which of his runners is worth the nap treatment is not easy but I’ve landed on this four-year-old hurdler, who was so highly rated at the yard last season that he was considered better even than Grumeti, one of the country’s leading juveniles. After an impressive victory at Newbury on New Year’s Eve, when there was a massive gap of 77 lengths back to the third, King held him back for the Cheltenham Festival to protect his handicap rating. But the grey lacked sufficient pace and street-wise experience in the Fred Winter, failing to justify heavy market-support. King is convinced he remains on an attractive mark and is almost sure to have him wound up for his seasonal bow today. It’s a competitive handicap against older rivals, but the step-up to 2m4f should help and victory might book a return ticket to Cheltenham next month for a tilt at the Greatwood Hurdle.
