Monday February 4
ZUIDER ZEE
Doncaster 1.50 WIN
After a spate of abandonments, the BHA deserves a lot of credit for organising this extra meeting, the highlight of which is a genuine Champion Hurdle trial featuring last season’s winner, Rock On Ruby. The selection, however, contests one of the shoulder races, a warm, competitive maiden hurdle over 2m4f. Newmarket-based trainer John Ferguson is a dab hand with recruits from the Flat, and Doncaster is one of the courses he favours to introduce them to the jumping game. This six-year-old son of Sakhee was a good-quality middle-distance/staying horse for John Gosden on the level, winning the November Handicap at this track in 2011 and attaining an official rating as high as 108. Sure to have schooled well, he could have too much class for his rivals today, particularly on ground that is drying all the time.
