Quick-fire burst is key to cup progress

Selston, whose title hopes were boosted by Cotgrave losing 3-1 in the league on Tuesday night, had a 4-0 cup win at Netherfield Albion with all the goals coming in a devastating 19 minute spell.

Damien James put Selston in front on 25 minutes with a half volley from the edge of the penalty area that took a deflection and looped over the goalkeeper.

The lead was then doubled three minutes later as James laid the ball back to Sean Gregory and he finished into the bottom corner of the net.

Two goals in three minutes then became three in five as Jay Cooper netted from close range, before the win was wrapped up just before half-time when Gregory put Dominic Airey through on goal and he finished well.

Awsworth Villa were also in cup action but lost 2-0 at Attenborough.

In the same competition, Underwood Villa won 2-0 away at Boots Athletic with Josh Niblett and Sam Tring scoring the goals.

In Division One, Awsworth Villa Reserves were held to a 3-3 draw at home to Gedling Southbank, Luke Grinham scoring twice and Kieran Saxton with their other goal to seal what was Villa’s first point of the season.

Kimberley Miners Welfare Reserves suffered a bit blow to their hopes of catching Newark Flowserve at the top by losing 4-0 away at the league leaders.

In Division Two, Watnall Athletic are top on goal difference, their latest win being 3-2 at Calverton Miners Welfare on Saturday, Joe Brookes, Mackenzy Hanson and Scott Singleton with the goals.

Kimberley MW AFC stay second after winning 5-0 at Sandhurst Reserves, Ben Foster, Daniel Walsh (2), Anthony Withe and Ben Greenhalgh on target.
