Watkinson impresses at Donington Park

Geena Watkinson achieved her two race wins at Mallory Park this Bank Holiday weekend.

Racing in the Mazda MX5 in the Max 5 Championship, the 16-year-old from Shirebrook earned her maiden victory before following that up with number two.

“Her race at Mallory Park was only her third race so to finish the Bank Holiday Monday with to class wins was great result," said John Cowan, president of Spirit Air, Geena's backers.

During the qualifying session Watkinson secured class pole position with a 1 min and 0.5 secs lap.

The race saw a very mixed grid as low entry numbers resulted in the MAX 5 Championship running with the Open Sports and Saloon race, meaning the grid included a Tabot Sunbeam Lotus, Global GT Lights and Ginetta G40 along with Mazdas.

During the second race of the day Watkinson smashed her qualifying time by putting in a 59.3 secs lap on the final lap of the race.

Watkinson made great progress at Donington Park in the MX5 Cup in the previous round as she secured second places in class.

In qualifying she clocked a 1 min 37 secs lap on a dry track.

The first race on the Saturday followed the Truck Race, which combined with the rain, made for a very slippery track indeed.

For race two the team made a few set-up changes to Watkinson’s car, which made the car better suited for the conditions which were dry.

During the second race Watkinson's lap times consistently improved, leading to personal best time of 1 min 34 secs.
