Sutton's Potter puts icing on his cake to top county rankings

Electric Ethan Potter took pride of place for Sutton Swimming Club on the final day of the Nottinghamshire ASA County Championships.

Potter added to his mulitple medal tally in the 12-year-old boys’ age group by winning gold in the 1500m and 50m freestyle finals and clocking new personal-best (PB) times. In the 1500m, he beat his nearest rival by three whole minutes.

Over the three weekends of the championship at Nottingham’s Harvey Hadden Leisure Centre, Potter amassed 1,811 points, a staggering 249 ahead of the runner-up, to top his age group from a field of 28.

Another multiple-medal winner from Sutton, Thomas Swales, did extremely well to finish second in the 35-strong 11-year-old boys’ age group. Swales posted many impressive swims, with his breaststroke victories the highlight.

A third Sutton swimmer to finish in the top three of his age group overall was 16-year-old Tom Trueman, who amassed 2,759 points to beat many experienced rivals in a category that contained 91 competitors.

Sarah Holmes was fourth of 33 in the 15-year-old girls’ age group, while both Harrison Clarke (12-year-old boys) and Chloe Quinn (16-year-old girls and over) were sixth overall in their age groups.

Others from Sutton to finish in the top ten overall were Ellis Senior (11-year-olds), Jared Collins (12-year-olds), Thomas Polley (14-year-olds), Talitha Oud (15-year-olds) and Callum Peel (16-and-over).

Potter was not the only member of the club to win medals in the stamina-sapping 1500m freestyle. Silvers were claimed by Harry McKeaney (13-year-olds), Amelia Roberts (12-year-olds) and Libby Dove (15-year-olds), while bronzes went to Molly Etherington (14-year-olds) and Ellie Read (16-and-over).

Ten Sutton swimmers qualified for 50m freestyle finals, with Harrison Clarke and Jack Patterson filling second and third spots behind Potter in the 12-year-old boys’ race.

Thomas Swales won silver in the ten-to-11-year-olds’ event, while Tom Trueman won bronze in a new PB in the 16-year-olds’ race.

An incredibly fast PB was also recorded by Sarah Holmes in the 15-year-old girls’ 50m freestyle as she clinched a silver medal, just ahead of Talitha Oud in fourth and Libby Dove in eighth.

In the 15-year-old boys’ final, Francis Dermody was a cred itable fifth.
