Smith double hands Selston the title

Selston FC were crowned Central Midlands Alliance Premier Division South Champions after a composed and determined 2–0 victory away at Holbrook Sports.

Knowing that victory would secure the title and promotion back to the United Counties League at the first attempt, Manager Lee Stevenson was forced into five changes from the previous fixture. Archie Corrall made his first appearance of the season in goal, while Moore, Bowering, Bland and Layton returned to the starting line-up.

A nervy opening reflected the magnitude of the occasion, but Selston gradually settled and began to assert control, with Leighton Bowering and Ben Moore dictating play in midfield. Bowering went close with a powerful strike from distance, forcing a fine save from the Holbrook goalkeeper.

At the other end, Holbrook threatened with a speculative effort, but Corrall marked his debut with an excellent save, tipping the ball over the bar.

The breakthrough came on 42 minutes. A well-delivered free-kick from the left by Jack Cockram found Josh Smith, who rose highest to power a header into the net, despite the goalkeeper getting a touch.

Selston continued on the front foot in the second half, showing composure and control as they looked to secure the result. Stevenson introduced fresh attacking options, with Tom Batterham replacing Layton on 66 minutes and Jordan Black coming on for Hines on 77.

The decisive second goal arrived on 87 minutes. Another superb delivery from Cockram was headed back across goal by Elliott Bland, allowing Josh Smith to once again rise and nod home — sparking jubilant scenes among the travelling supporters.

Moments later, the final whistle confirmed a historic achievement. Selston were crowned champions, with league representative Phil Handley presenting the trophy to captain Jack Cockram, igniting celebrations on and off the pitch.

A fitting end to a remarkable campaign sees Selston return to the United Counties League at the first attempt.

Manager Lee Stevenson said: “I’m incredibly proud of everyone connected with this football club. To come here, in a game with so much riding on it, and deliver that performance shows exactly what this group is about.

“We had to deal with a bit of pressure early on, but once we settled, I thought we controlled the game really well. The lads showed composure, discipline, and a real desire to get the job done.

“Josh has been outstanding for us and stepped up again with two big goals, but that result was built on a full team performance.

To win the title and achieve promotion at the first attempt is a fantastic achievement. The players, staff, and supporters all deserve this — it’s a special moment for the club.”
