The captain enjoyed a stellar 2019 competition, leading the run-scoring charts with 521 runs at an average of 74.42, while also scoring three centuries. However, with no 50-over competition played in 2020, the opener was unable to build on these foundations.

With games against the likes of Nottinghamshire, Yorkshire, Somerset and Surrey in this season’s schedule, Godleman is looking forward to playing List-A cricket in 2021, and believes the ability to rotate the side and give chances to younger players will be crucial throughout the competition.

“I love playing 50-over cricket, the different phases of the game and the tactical side, both as an opener and a captain, make it a pleasure to play,” he said.

“I know that all of the guys who have the chance to play in the Royal London Cup are excited about being able to get back out there and play some 50-over cricket.

“Last year showed how beneficial it can be for us (to rotate the squad), not only for individual players, but for us to be winning games of cricket. we had a really inexperienced bowling attack in the four-day competition last season, and we rotated those players to maintain appropriate workloads.

“Games will come thick and fast again this season, but we know that this squad is capable of playing some really good cricket and winning games. For the younger players to be able to test their skills at first team level in a competition like this is really good.”
