Glory for Mansfield Harriers in county schools' cross- country races

A string of outstanding performances put the name of Mansfield Harriers up in lights at the Nottinghamshire County Schools’ Cross-Country Championships.

Harriers paraded four county champions and achieved a further six podium places at the event, which was held at Berry Hill Park in Mansfield.

What’s more, 14 of their runners qualified for the English Schools Championship event, to be held at Liverpool in March, while a further nine made it through to the year-seven and primary schools’ regional event, to be held in Loughborough.

The club’s strongest performance came in the years eight and nine boys’ age group, where four Harriers finished in the top five. A superb display of front-running by Jake Greenhalgh saw him storm to victory, with Sam Knott taking bronze, Jake Orr fourth and Johar Ali fifth, ahead of Ed Sankey in 13th, Harry Wilkinson 31st and Will Sankey 33rd.

Jenson Connell continued his tremendous winter with a clear victory in the year 12/13 boys’ race, with Sam Bentley fifth.

Newcomer Eddie Lowe won the years five and six boys’ race, with Dan

Adams tenth, James Harris 21st and Henry Waller 54th, while Eddie Holden took bronze in the year-seven boys’ event, closely followed by Riley Scot in sixth.

Billy Farquharson qualified for his first national event, placing fifth in the race for years ten and 11, ahead of Henry Bullough in seventh and Sam Wilkinson in 12th .

For the girls, there was a fantastic one-two from Lily Mason and Amelia Arbon in the years five and six race, followed by Maisie Slack in 11th, Zia Clayton-Wade in 23rd and Scarlet Jane 51st .

England international Lauren McNeil enjoyed a comfortable run in the years 12 and 13 race, placing second, while Olivia Barrett took a bronze medal in the years ten and 11 event, with Olivia Hare finishing sixth, Caitlin Dodds tenth and Amelia Shackleton 27th .

In the race for years eight and nine, Ruby Milnes was sixth, Grace Manson seventh, Jemima Waller 12th, Ava Blake 16th, Ella Kennedy 24th, Zoe Spencer 28th, Elizabeth Sinclair 31st and Martha Yanney 32nd.
