Championship success for rookie driver Geena Watkinson following Silverstone victory

Geena Watkinson has won her class championship in the Mazda MX5 Cup - in her rookie year.

The 17-year-old secured victory with two race wins at Silverstone on her very first visit to the famous Northamptonshire circuit.

Qualifying was greeted with challenging conditions, with a very wet and slippery track.

Geena skilfully avoided a big shunt when she had a spin going on the start-finish straight.

But putting that behind her, the Shirebrook teenager qualified in pole position for her class with a time of 1 min 56 seconds on a track that she had never previously driven on.

The first race saw Geena make a good start on a still slippery but drying track.

Over the course of the race Geena’s times consistently improved with a personal best of 1 minute 34 seconds on the final lap of the race.

Her performance was strong enough to see her victorious in her class.

The second race saw Geena racing on dry but cooling track so she had to work to maintain tyre temperature.

Geena finished the race first in class and as a result secured the championship win.

John Cowan, president of Spirit Air, who have supported Geena’s racing throughout the season, was delighted.
