Ollie again scoops top title at Active Ashfield awards night

Active Ashfield’s 2013 Sports Awards evening recognised and rewarded some of Ashfield’s outstanding achievements over the past year at the Festival Hall Leisure Centre last week.

Ollie Hynd’s success in the pool once again earned him the Disabled Sportsperon Award and, in recognition of receiving an MBE for Services to Swimming in May this year, Ollie’s parents also received a Special Achievement Award on his behalf from the chairman of Ashfield District Council, Coun Linford Gibons.

Special Achievement Awards were also presented to Ashfield School’s Sports Leadership Academy, in recognition of receiving Sports Leaders (UK) Academy Status, and to the Catch 22 Project New Horizon Team, who completed an expedition in Iceland earlier this year.

Clive Morris of Ashfield Juniors Hockey Club picked up this year’s Service to Sport Award for his contribution to community sport and to hockey at all levels for over 35 years.

The Junior Disabled Sportsperson was awarded to Meg McFarlane from the Lammas Ice Skating Club for winning gold medals in both the Special Olympics GB International and the Inter-Nation Inclusive Skating Competition.

Kickboxer Ebony Upton, from Selston, won the Junior Sportsperson Award ahead of 33 other nominations.

In August this year she travelled with WUMA Great Britain to compete in the World Martial Arts Games in Switzerland.

In Korean patterns she took the silver medal and in two light continuous sparring competitions she gained one silver and one gold.

The event included performances from Ashfield’s Gotta Dance performers and Ashfield District Council Workplace.

Other award winners were: Club – Hucknall Town Netball Club, Team – Ashfield RUFC Ladies, Junior Team – Ashfield Vipers Under 15 Girls (Volleyball), Primary School Team – Croft Netball, Secondary School Team – Ashfield Year 10 Netball, Performance Coach – Phil Beniston (Powerlifting), Community Coach – Hayley Saggers (Underwood Villa FC), Young Coach – Richard Younger (Ashfield Juniors Hockey Club), Volunteer – Jeannette Clark (Hucknall Town Netball Club), Junior Volunteer – Louis Brown and Oliver Weston (Ashfield Juniors Hockey Club), Change 4 Life Award – Scott Reynolds, Change 4 Life Family Award – Toni Hopkinson and Family, Active Ashfield Volunteer Awards – Chloe Wilson, Jordan Mitchell, Carole Travis, Russell Bowler, Kenny Oxley (Platinum), Louis Brown, Oliver Weston (Gold), Kierra Vann, Ryan Gee and Beth Clarke (Gold), Active Ashfield Club Awards – Hucknall Town Netball Club (Gold), Ashfield Allstars Cheerleaders (Silver), Gold Card – Jack Sawyer.

Co-presenter Andrew James, from BBC Sport, said: “It is great to be involved in an event that recognises the wealth of talent and commitment to providing opportunities for people of all abilities and at all levels in Ashfield.
