The vastly experienced Trego has been snapped up after 16 years at Somerset, and is keen to get stuck in to the Trent Bridge revival.

“The first few weeks have been great,” said the 38-year-old all-rounder. “The boys have been fantastic and welcomed me with open arms.

“The buzz in the squad is exactly as Peter Moores described it. We are getting ourselves ready for a big season in 2020 and it has been impressive to be around.”

Trego spent his final year at Somerset on a white-ball contract only. But Notts expect him to play a key role in their County Championship side, helping them regain their place in the top flight after relegation in 2019.

Trego added: “The basis of any good-quality side is how they fare in the Championship, so that will be a big focus for me.

“The season Notts had last season was a surprise to everyone. But it’s now like a blank canvas and, hopefully, I can add some quality and experience to the team.

“The test of your quality as a player is four-day cricket, which is something I missed last year. It brings challenges, which I am more than capable of meeting.”

Trego insists his fitness is still good, and he is looking forward to playing at a ground where his record over the years is excellent.

He said: “if you can’t get excited about playing at Trent Bridge, you’re in the wrong job. I can’t wait to get started.”
