Title-chasing Taylor shines at local circuit

Mansfield Woodhouse racer Taz Taylor had a weekend he won’t forget in a while with two second place podiums in the Motul Motostar 125cc Championship at Donington Park.

Travelling down the short distance to his home circuit, Taylor arrived ready to do business and immediately proved himself in the Friday warm-up sessions, setting the fifth fastest laps in both sessions and, importantly, finishing ahead of Ed Rendall, who is leading the championship.

With the Motostar Championship running the postponed Cadwell Park race on Saturday afternoon, qualifying was reduced to one 30 minute session.

In a session where the fastest lap was 1.3 seconds under the lap record, Taylor did a fantastic job of posting a lap of 1:39.432 (0.3 seconds outside the lap record) which was good enough for fifth and a full second ahead of the championship leader.

Race one was a classic from the start for Taylor. Over the 10-lap race, Taylor looked the complete package and was able to keep himself out in front from the hard-charging Olly Simpson to end the race in fourth overall and second in the 125GP class.

This was a great boost for the teenager and a superb result for his hard-working mechanics.

With the boost in confidence from Saturday’s race, Taylor was looking to maintain his momentum and continue to reduce the gap on the championship leader and he didn’t disappoint.

After missing the wreckage of Simpson’s Moto3 machine, who crashed exiting Melbourne Loop, Taylor found himself in a bit of a no man’s land as he circulated in third overall and second behind Brad Ray.

This was another quality performance by Taylor who admitted after the race that he’d struggled for grip throughout the 14 laps.

Taylor is now 59 points behind in the championship with just three races left.
