The action took place alongside the latest round of the British Superbike Championship, and the 21-year-old Ryde looked in good nick from the off, really attacking Friday’s practice session and qualifying.

It was an uphill battle because he was still feeling the effects of his horrendous crash at Thruxton last month and was also hampered by a lack of data for the circuit. But he finished practice in a good sixth spot and improved to fourth on the grid after the qualifying session when he was the quickest GP2 bike on the track.

In the sprint race, Ryde soon settled in fifth before being pushed back to sixth by title contender Jack Kennedy. It wasn’t long before the five front-runners got away from him, opening up a considerable gap on the 1.6-mile circuit, and all Ryde could do was watch from afar. He finished in seventh position as the second GP2 machine past the post.

In the morning warm-up session the next day, Ryde improved again on his lap times before tackling the 26-lap feature race, starting sixth on the grid. That’s where he finished too, sitting between two packs of riders ahead and behind.
