Moto X action back in Sherwood Forest

The penultimate round six of the Golden Tyres MX GT Cup returned to the purpose-built British Championship course near Warsop Windmill.

Red hot weather and dust proved a big challenge for all the riders, which included junior and youth races.

For some retaining a championship lead was all that really mattered. For others making sure they were still in the hunt come the August finale at Culham was the only game in town.

Either way, it was going to take a ripping good effort as the penultimate round of this year’s GT Cup hit the Sherwood Forest track.

In the Judd Racing Autos, one such outstanding show – indeed his best of the season going 1-1-3-1-1 - saw nine-year-old Ollie Colmer snatch first overall.

Colmer is now also the new series leader as Bayliss Utting finished as weekend runner-up with a smart consistent set of results.

Billy Moriarty was the winner of the other heat and he duly made podium third.

As for previous section leader Charlie Reynolds, he really did have a weekend to forget.

His bad luck began with a race one start line crash and his weekend further panned out beset with machine problems.

Up at the sharp end in the EHR 65s, it was pretty much business as usual with Spanish import Eddie Jay Wade once again on top form.

Four heat wins for him was more than good enough for gold as Louie Kessell picked up the other win and section silver.

The action behind the leading duo was more intense as, following a poor heat one, Charlie Heyman really had his work cut out.

A terrific show from Jack Lindsay almost stole third overall, but Heyman recovered brilliantly, grabbing four third place finishes.

In the SW 85s Kacey Hird set a blistering time in qualification, almost three seconds clear, but come the racing action it was a much closer run thing.

The battle for top spot rested between Hird, Drew Anderson and series leader Calum Mitchell.

Over the course of the season Mitchell has proved to be the battler supreme, and once again he came out on top with three heat wins.

Anderson fell just short, taking two wins, as Hird finished in third with a best of two seconds.

In the scrap for series second, Sam Nunn, Connor Fish and Josh Peters tore strips off each other, finishing in fourth, fifth and sixth respectively, but it’s Peters who holds onto championship second.

Over in the BW 85s it was Keenan Hird ripping it up in qualification ahead of Dexter Douglas, Tommy Lockhart and Marcus Phelps.

Following a sensational cut and thrust two days of action, where all four guys crossed the line first, the overall result all came down to a last race decider. Initially Phelps had it under control but a mid-race slip let Hird in for his second win of the weekend and the overall glory.

Phelps, the winner of heat one, had to settle for second overall as Lockhart just edged out Douglas for weekend third.

In MXY2 Youth Lites series leader Tony Saunders made a confident start, nailing the opening win. Kyle Lane blasted away and led every lap of heat two as Saunders was also the winner of heat three. Henry Siddiqui made off with the major spoils in heat four, but it was Lane who grabbed the decisive heat five win.

In the tear-up which was Adult 125s, youth star Jordan Eccles absolutely stole the show, nailing down four scintillating clear cut wins.

Only Jim Davies managed to head him, gaining the victory in heat two, and this was by the narrowest of margins as the pair crossed the line nose to tail.

Second overall went to Henry Williams as he upped his game in Sunday action going 2-2-2.

Davies made third overall with his championship lead still well intact as Rob Yates beat off Josh Coleman and Michael Ellis for fourth.

Shaun Southgate was the undoubted class act in the British Clubman’s championship at the previous round, and once again he was the man to beat.

Lee Harrison was his main adversary, but not until heat four did Southgate finally yield, following three storming wins.

In a pulsating last heat Southgate managed to get his nose in front mid-race, but Harrison came back all guns blazing to claim a well deserved win and second overall.

Third overall went the way of Dan Brough as he carded 3-3-2-3. In the championship standings Junior Thomas leads the way from Rob Wood in second with Leighton Holmes third.

In the top of the shop MX U23s, a fully fit and sorted Scott Elderfield was a joy to watch as he hurtled the Lanes Honda around, picking up three wins and a second.

Lanes team mate Alfie Smith was the other race victor as he ran in a 1-2-2-2 card for second overall.

With both Elderfield and Smith dropping rounds, the season-long dice for series gold has now swung the way of Ashley Smith.

Husqvarna-mounted Smith scored third overall, going 4-3-3-3, as his main rival Carlton Husband suffered a serious set back with a race two DNS.
