Mansfield Rugby Club won the second annual Greene King IPA Touch Sevens tournament at the headquarters of English rugby, Twickenham, on their first appearance at the competition.

Mansfield came out the eventual winners by beating York Rugby 2-0 in the final.

Greene King is the brewery supplier and a sponsor of Mansfield Rugby Club and, as such, qualified the Blue & Whites to be extended an invitation to enter a team in the event. Greene King IPA is also the official beer of England rugby.

Although Mansfield endured a tough time in National League 3 this year, they ended the season on a high with a fifth consecutive Notts County Cup win, a record 18th in total, and are now able to proudly place the Greene King IPA Shield in the trophy cabinet too.

Coach Steve Shaw was delighted and said: “The opportunity to play at Twickenham doesn’t come very often in a player’s life and the lads were very keen to be involved.

“There were one or two moments on the way to the final, but everyone is really pleased that we have won this on our first attempt.”
