Tibshelf Town End School’s Joshua Leeson enjoyed a night to remember at the Derbyshire Schools’ Sports Association Awards as he was named Primary School Sportsperson of the Year.
The 11-year-old swimmer attended a ceremony held at Chesterfield FC’s Proact Stadium to pick up his winner’s trophy in front of around 180 guests.
Joshua was nominated after qualifying to swim at the 2014 Midland Age Group Championships, swimming six qualification times in one day having never achieved a Midland qualification time previously.
His success has led to him being invited to join the elite swimming squad ‘Nova’, which was responsible for training Mansfield’s double Olympic champion Rebecca Adlington.
During the evening, the top three in each of the Derbyshire School Games Championships which ran throughout the 2013-14 school year, were announced, with Shirebrook Academy joint third in the Individual Schools Game Plus section.
There was also success for South Normanton’s Glebe Junior School, who finished third in the Individual Primary School Championship category.
It was something of a hard luck story for the Bolsover District School Sport Partnership, who finished second in all three combined school events – the Competition Plus Championship, the Primary Competition Championship and the Secondary Competitions Championship.
The Derbyshire Schools’ Sports Association Sports Awards are organised by the Derbyshire Schools’ Sports Association (DSSA) with support from Derbyshire Sport, and recognise pupils who have achieved success in school sport during the academic year 2013-14, as well as young leaders and adult volunteers.
