Sutton swimmers celebrate third place in county gala league

Sutton Swimming Club turned in a fantastic team performance to finish third in the final of the Nottinghamshire ASA Stage Two gala at Bramcote Leisure Centre.

Just to reach the final was a fantastic achievement, but to finish third was an excellent result with all swimmers making a tremendous contribution to the overall success. Even more impressive was that two nine-year-old boys were making their competitive debuts for Sutton SC, Jack Berta and Spike Atkinson shaking off early nerves to produce turned great swims as part of the 10/U relay teams.

Sutton and CABSC were neck and neck for third spot most of the night with Sutton leading by just one point going into the final cannon relay event.

In a tense final event Sutton managed to finish third with CABSC fifth, which meant Sutton clenched third place on the night by just three points.

Winners on the night were Leander A with 227 gala points, who beat Worksop by just one point, Sutton were third with 176 points, CABSC finished a close fourth with 173, Carlton fifth with 138 and Newark sixth with 81 points.

Once the night’s final places were known, the points from this gala were added to the overall league points from the previous two rounds.

At the start of the night Sutton had been in fifth place overall of the 18 teams competing.

However, their finish in the final round was enough to ensure that Sutton climbed the overall table even higher to finish in an impressive third place overall. Leander finished top overall club with Worksop finishing second overall.

Sutton also had 16 swimmers represent them at the Retford Open Meet at Retford Leisure Centre.

A total of 21 clubs were represented and Sutton secured the third highest team points total on the day, narrowly behind City of Sheffield and Retford swimming clubs.

The Sutton swimmers were all aged between nine and 15 and entered a total of 87 events between them.

Sutton swimmers secured an astonishing 53 top three trophies from these 87 events and an incredible 51 personal best times.

Prior to that Retford Open Meet Sutton SC had also competed in the fifth of six rounds of Division Three in the Sports Centre league at the Lammas Leisure Centre. Sutton SC maintained their recent run of good form and again won the gala on the night, beating Kimberley SC into second place, Sherwood B were third, Mansfield B fourth and Portland SC fifth.

Sutton remain top of Division Three and, with just one round remaining, are almost certainly guaranteed of gaining promotion to Division Two for next year’s competition.
