Splash Night 2012 at Sutton Swimming Club

Sutton Swimming Club held its annual Slash Night event at the Lammas Leisure Centre on Friday, a gala designed to provide all Beginner swimmers at the club aged between 6-10 years a chance to taste the atmosphere of a competitive gala in a friendly environment.

Splash Night provides Beginner swimmers with experience of racing in front of an enthusiastic crowd with the announcer introducing each swimmer before the start of every race to the sound of rapturous applause.

This event sees the vast majority of these young swimmers starting competitive races from diving blocks for the first time and introduces them to the the scrutiny of race officials including referees, judges and timekeepers.

With 25m races and 50m races in each of the 4 strokes the gala concludes with an opportunity to compete in a 100m Individual Medley race. The top three swimmers in each event win Gold, Silver and Bronze medals with every swimmer receiving a Certificate of Merit to acknowledge their introduction to competitive swimming.

Medals were won on the night by Kian Potter, Izak Houlden Stopps, Lauren Church, Nell Polley, Lauren Morley, Benjamin Ward, Matthew Woodhall, Owen Harding, Megan Smith, Ellie Varley, Ellethea Hawley, Kimberley Holland, Keira Dobbs, Caid Murphy-Lea and Tammy Chamberlain with many of these swimmers receiving multiple medals.

Certificates of Merit were also awarded on the night to Emily Iliffe, Molly Etherington, James Peel, Alice Jones, Maddison Hammond and Lydia Pascoe.

Head Coach Gren Greaves was delighted with how Splash Night went and commented on the fantastic atmosphere that was evident throughout the club with many of the older and experienced swimmers turning out to support the Beginner swimmers. In addition to Beginner swimmers gaining valuable experience, Gren also noted the high number of Personal Best times achieved on the night.

He added that the future of Sutton Swimming Club continues to look bright with some really talented swimmers emerging through the ranks again.
