STAMPING his mark as favorite to take the 2012 InterSteps Championship, Southwell’s Matt Mason, racing for Mark Godwin Racing Ltd this year, once again earned his place as one of the UK’s brightest racing prospects with a double victory at a sunny Oulton Park circuit in the first round of the 2012 InterSteps Championship.

As the first race of the 2012 season got underway, Matt and P2-placed Matt Parry quickly pulled away from the rest of the field behind.

Despite some pressure to maintain his position in the early laps, Matt quickly gained momentum and was able to keep a comfortable gap to second place, achieving the fastest lap in the process as he crossed the line to take his and MGR Motorsport’s first victory of 2012.

Race two wasn’t so easy for Matt, who dropped to second place as the lights went out and battled side by side through Old Hall and down the Avenue, giving second-placed Matt Parry the line into the first left-hander at Cascades.

However, Matt put in focused drive, knowing he had the speed to take the lead.

From that point on Matt continued to show his speed, once again setting the fastest lap of the race by almost half a second as he crossed the line with a four second lead, greeted by a jubilant MGR Motorsport team, who were enjoying their debut race weekend in the 2012 InterSteps Championship.
