Sherwood Colliery Swimming Club’s Imogen Gould (18) will line up alongside Britain’s swimming elite to compete in the British Championships at Ponds Forge in Sheffield, which begins today.
The British Gas Championships are the highlight of the national events calendar, and with a number of GB’s big names hanging up their caps and goggles after London 2012, there will be a new focus on the next group of able-bodied and multi-classification athletes to rise to the challenge and take the top performances.
With over 600 competitors travelling from all over the UK to take part, the event doubles up as trials for the 2013 World Championships in Barcelona, and top swimmers such as Hannah Miley, Liam Tancock, Michael Jamieson and Ellie Simmonds have already confirmed their participation.
In addition to her five national qualifying times for the British Youth Championships in July, Imogen’s 50m breaststroke time, 34.05 secs, also earned her a place in the British Championships, and she heads to Ponds Forge with her Nova Centurion team mates to take her rightful place on the blocks at swimming’s national showpiece event.
Alongside her in Sheffield will be London 2012 Paralympic silver medallist and Sherwood swimmer Charlotte Henshaw, who will compete in the multi-classification 100m breaststroke and 200m individual medley events alongside her Nova Centurion team mate Oliver Hynd, of Kirkby.
