Ashfield welcomed the visit of Market Drayton for this Midland Junior Vase Round 2 Cup Tie and were forced to make changes, bringing in Tim Gibbons for his first senior appearance of the season at scrum half, and switching Pete Aldread to fullback to cover for Dave Beecham.
From the kick-off Ashfield started the brighter of the two sides dominating the line out and scrum, but again their ill discipline around the ruck resulted in conceding several penalties when in good positions.
This finally led to Market Drayton opening the scoring on 14 minutes with a well-struck penalty. However, Ashfield continued to dominate the forward play and after 17 minutes Pete Aldread finished off a well-rehearsed move from the base of the scrum joining the line at pace from full-back to go over under the post from 15 yards.
Jack Hayes successfully added the conversion to take Ashfield into a 7-3 lead. Ashfield increased their lead on 32 minutes when Jack Hayes added three points with a penalty just left of centre from about 30 yards after sustained Ashfield pressure.
Market Drayton did have a great opportunity to reduce the arrears on 37 minutes when they were awarded a penalty under the posts after their best spell of pressure but fortunately for Ashfield the chance went begging. That was to be the last meaningful action of the half.
The early part of the second half was played largely in midfield with neither side able to string many phases together.
As the game approached its last quarter Ashfield again got on top with their forwards beginning to dominate. This led to Chris Houseman finishing off good forward play after man-of-the-match Josh Heald made the initial break close to the line.
Again the trusted boot of Jack Hayes added the extra two points. Ashfield scored their third try on the stroke of full-time when Dan Wilson was powered over the line from the impressive Ashfield forwards again Jack Hayes added the extras from under the posts.
