MANSFIELD Giants came away from the weekend empty handed - despite a much improved performance - after double defeat against two of the league’s top sides.
On Saturday, the Giants took on London Eastside Eagles and couldn’t have got off to a better start.
Great ball movement resulted in the Giants knocking down jump shot after jump shot.
The Eagles struggled as the Giants ran away with the first quarter 31-16.
The Londoners composed them selves but again the Giants teamwork proved too much as they went into the locker room with a 53 - 36 lead.
The tables soon turned as the Eagles came out from half time fired up and started playing some very aggressive defence.
The bewildered Giants struggled to cope as the Eagles clawed their way back into the game.
The Eagles scored a massive 36 points in the final quarter to snatch the game from the Giants.
With the Giants fouling to stop the clock, the Eagles took a 98-82 win.
Head coach Dan Richards said it was a game of two halves and the Giants made an excellent start to the game.
“ I think the first is probably the best we have played all season, and the second struggled to execute against their tough defence,” he said.
On Sunday the Giants made the short trip to high flyer’s Loughborough.
Again the Giants made a fantastic start taking an early lead, but tough full court caused some sloppy turnovers leading to some easy baskets for Loughborough to tie the first quarter at 16 a piece.
Excellent ball movement by the Giants carved through the Loughborough defence, but again the home side came back to take a six point lead at the hard.
It seemed to be the same story as the previous day, as the sleeping Giants just didn’t turn up to play in the third quarter and Loughborough began to open up a lead.
The Giants got the deficit down to just four points with two minutes left but it was not enough and Loughborough claimed a 74-60 win.
