Mansfield Harrier Ella Hughes continued her fine winter season with a 12th place finish at the English National Cross Country Championships.

Hughes was competiting in the U20 ladies six kilometre during a tough strength-sapping event at Parliament Hill Fields in London.

She overtook several competitors in the last mile as she continued her impressive recent progress.

Ella was backed up by the ever consistent Hannah Hardy, who finished 46th in the same race a position that would have been higher but for a nasty fall on the first lap.

Bethany Williams had the race of her life in the U17 ladies five kilometre race as she finished in a totally unexpected 32nd.

Again Bethany is at the bottom end of the age group and can be expected to improve again over the next year.

This improvement is testament of the hard training she has put in this winter.

May Roberts competed in the U15 girls race. However illness dented her chances of the kind of run expected so she used the event for a training run to finish mid division.

Leading the way for the boys was Archie Rayner and Alex Rieley in the U17 boys six kilometre race.

These two were part of the winning Midland team from last month and again showed why they are two of the best in the country.

Archie, who has another year in the age group, was always near the front of the field and finished a superb eighth.

Alex started within the main pack and came through to finish an excellent 17th. Both now can go onto the final major races of the winter in great shape and looking for further success.

The Harriers line up was completed by Jon and Amanda Hardy who competed with distinction in the senior races.
