Mansfield Harriers honour dedicate members

Five members of Mansfield Harriers were recognised for their outstanding achievements and contribution to the club during a special presentation.

Club President John Radford made awards to Ted Grey, Steve Davies, Pat Carlan, Richard Massey and Steve Lisgo, who were all made honorary life members of Mansfield Harriers .

Ted Grey, who has been a club member for over 50 years, has been a prolific hurdles coach for many years and is regarded as one of the best in the country. Ted coached Rob Newton, who competed at the Olympic Games in Athens in 2004 and has coached numerous national age group, English schools and Midland champions.

He is a member of the England Athletics Coach Mentor scheme and Director Norwood Hurdles Academy and has been an England Athletics Flying Coach visiting other clubs as a specialist coach for the last 10 years.

Pat Carlan is the current club chairman and has been a club member since the 1980’s. Pat served as President of the English Cross Country Association in 2012/13 and as President of the Midlands Cross Country Association in 2010/11.

He has been course director of the National Cross Country Championships for the last 27 years as well as course director of the Midland Cross Country Championships in 2008 and 2012 and the English schools Cross Country Championships in 2005.

A prolific race organiser of numerous local cross country and road races, Pat has also been an endurance coach at club for many years where he was coach to former GB internationals Billy Farquarson and current England vets international Mark Johnson.

Steve Davies is an outstanding club man who has also served the club as club chairman and is the current minute secretary.

A club member since the 1960’s, he is a former Welsh cross country and road international and former club record holder for the marathon with a time of 2 hrs 21 mins - holding the record from 1989 to 2012.

Steve is the current Nottinghamshire AAA Cross Country team manager and Mansfield Harriers senior men’s road and cross country manager; roles he has performed for many years.

Richard Massey is another loyal, long serving clubman who joined the club in the 60’s and after an excellent career as a good standard runner became an outstanding coach.

Specialising in middle distance Richard has been coach to numerous national age group and English Schools medallists over many years, including coach to GB internationals Billy Farquarson and Steve Lisgo.

East Midlands Coach of the Year in 2013, Richard is a member of England Athletics Mentoring Scheme where he supports other developing coaches in the county. Richard has also served the club as an administrator as a former club chairman and member of club committee for many years.

Steve Lisgo receives his life membership based on his outstanding performances as a track athlete being the latest club member to achieve international honours. Steve competed in the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014 as well as the European Under 23 Championships in 2009. He took 3rd place in the prestigious American University championships in 2009 and has been a regular junior and senior Scottish international since 2005. Steve topped the UK rankings in 2009 and was Mansfield Sports Person of Year 2009 and 2014.
