Mansfield Giants Ladies warm up for play-off challenge

MANSFIELD Giants’ ladies finished their regular basketball season with a 81-28 win over Doncaster Danum Eagles, which gave them third place in the league and a place in the quarter-finals of the play-offs.

Giants had a slow start with player-coach Gail Richards converting two foul shots awarded.

Charlotte Levitt dominated inside for Giants, with Matthews returning scoring baskets for Doncaster.

Giants called a time-out and changed their defence and rotated the bench well to take a 12-7 lead.

A strong second quarter for Mansfield, with points from Jo Richards and Jess Shillito inside, helped them build the lead further, with Giants now dominating both ends of the court and Doncaster struggling to score points.

Giants moved the ball well, with guards Katy Taylor and Kirsty Russell contributing points to the tally, with Doncaster also in foul trouble, and Giants adding valuable free throws to lead 33-15.

Mansfield then stepped up their defensive efforts, which led to Doncaster scoring just four points in the quarter. Taylor began to find her form, adding three-point shots.

Giants dominated from both inside the key and shot well from the outside, with Doncaster struggling to contain Giants from scoring and rebounding as Giants took the lead further 57-19.

The final quarter saw Giants continue to move the ball well, with J. Richards now finding her form, scoring a three-pointer as Taylor added her seventh three of the game.

All of Giants’ players gained valuable minutes on court with youngster Clarke scoring her first league points for the senior ladies’ team, to ensure all of Mansfield’s players scored points in the game.

Giants now face Newham (NASSA) Stars this weekend away in the quarter-final of the women’s playoffs, which is a great achievement for the club as they begin to build on last year’s re-structure (tip-off and date to be confirmed).

The U14 girls were also in action as they played a strong Cheshire Jets and lost 84-21.

They play Barrow Thorns in their last league game of the season this Saturday at Oak Tree.

The U12 minis team are in action this coming Sunday as they play Hucknall Hornets in their final league game of the season.

Giants are taking part in the sport relief mile at Oak Tree Leisure Centre. The club are putting in a team of players, coaches and parents this coming Sunday prior to the men’s game.

Another Sport Relief event took place at Oak Tree Leisure Centre last week as Sport Direct Staff took on a Giants select team, which saw Giants men’s, women’s and junior players combining to play against Sports Direct to help raise vital funds for Sport Relief.
