After a long trip to the north-east, Mansfield Giants found out exactly why Team Newcastle University are top and unbeaten in the Men’s Third Division of the National Basketball League.

Newcastle, who are run on a more professional footing than most sides in the UK, strode to a 100-68 victory against a Giants side who are more of a community club, with players even paying subs each week.

Coach Ian Richards said: “Newcastle have good, athletic players who play with intensity and intelligence throughout and never let anything faze them. Nevertheless, we showed great spirit and worked hard to compete. In the first quarter, when we trailed only 21-19, we were exceptional in every way and outplayed our opponents. However, we just could not sustain it against such a physical side.”

Calvin Morant-Hudson was top scorer with 22.
