It was another weekend of disappointment for the Mansfield Giants as they went down 88-79 to Leeds Force in basketball’s EBL Division Three.
Head coach Dan Richards said: “We worked extremely hard, but think we were saving ourselves early on and dug ourselves a hole.
“Lets take nothing away from Leeds, they put on an outstanding display of three point shooting nailing 14 long range shots.
“We have got two very tough games left, and although we will have players coming back into the line-up, we must prepare better.”
The Giants started the game with some slick passing to jump out to an early lead, but some poor defensive rotations allowed Leeds four wide open shots which they knocked down to win the first quarter 23-20.
Coach Richards only had six fit players to choose from, and with fatigue setting in, Leeds raced ahead to take a 12 point lead going into the half-time break.
Big man Barry Plummer started to dominate inside, but an outstanding display of long range shooting stopped the Giants from closing the gap.
A gritty performance from the Giants cut the deficit to just eight points in the final period, but they ran out of steam as Leeds took the nine point win.
Giants’ top scorers: B. Plummer 39, G. Collins 13, C. M. Hudson 12.
The Giants are back in action this weekend with a game against Newcastle Under Lyme College. Tip-off is 6.30pm at the Oak Tree Leisure Centre.
Last time the two teams met back in December, the Giants snatched a two point win.
Before that Giants’ women are at home to Bury Blue Devils (4.30pm).
Mansfield Giants U16s continued their good run of form with a 60-55 win against Barnsley Leaders.
With three games remaining the team are still fighting for a play-off spot.
The Giants U13s confirmed their play-off spot, finishing third in their league with a comfortable win against Leicester Warriors.
