In little over a month’s time, Mansfield boxer Kieran McGhee steps through the ropes for his first professional fight.

The former All Saints School pupil makes his debut at Thomas Magnus School Sports Centre in Newark.

And Kieran (20), who won 19 of 27 bouts as an amateur and represented Mansfield Amateur Boxing Club, said he can’t wait to make his professional bow on 2nd November.

Said Kieran: “I’m really excited. I’m a bit like a kid at Christmas at the minute, I’m not really sleeping because it’s always on my mind!

“The training is a bit different as a pro, it’s a lot more strength-based.

“I feel a lot stronger, and I’ve been getting sparring with top boxers from around Lincolnshire and Sheffield and it’s been a great experience and really helped me improve.”

He added: “My training will get more intense within the next few weeks so it’ll be really hard graft but my fitness should really come on. I’ll definitely be ready for the fight.”

Kieran trains in Newark with Carl Greaves, a former Mansfield-based professional boxer who is also a promoter and manager. Carl twice challenged to be the best super-featherweight boxer in Britain and regularly entertained large crowds at the old Mansfield Leisure Centre with his boxing.

And Kieran, who has an exciting hit-and-move style, said he hopes to build up a similar following with the fans.

He said: “I have a very awkward boxing style and I like to adapt to my opponent’s style when I get into the ring.

“Obviously, I’m like any other boxer I want to be a world champion but I’m just going to take every fight as it comes and see what happens.

“I want to put Mansfield back onto the boxing map.”

Fans who make the journey to Newark will get to watch Kieran’s six-round bout and also five other competitive fights featuring top boxers from around the region, one of which is a title fight.

Kieran thanked Mansfield Amateur Boxing Club, Mansfield Woodhouse Rugby Club and everybody who has supported him thus far in his boxing career.

Tickets for the show are from £30 and are available direct from Kieran on 07504 220415 or from
