Mansfield and Ashfield swimmers on form at regionals

A squad of Mansfield an Ashfield swimmers produced some promising performances at the first weekend of the 2015 SRS Leisure Midland Regional Age Group Championships held in Coventry.

The young squad of 11-14 year-olds started the Championships in impressive fashion, securing 11 finals places between them as they claimed four top three podium finishes and amassed a vast array of new, long course personal best times.

Competing against some of the biggest Clubs in the sport, Sherwood Colliery SC’s Lily Boseley lead the local charge, claiming two gold medals for the Nova Centurion squad and a clean sweep of the backstroke finals in the Girls 14 years 100m and 200m events.

She added a bronze in the final of the 200m freestyle and a seventh place in the 400m freestyle.

Completing the weekend podium finishes for Nova Centurion, Mansfield SC’s Summer Kennedy took bronze in the final of the Girls 14 years 400m Freestyle.

She also claimed another two finals places in the 200m freestyle and 200m backstroke, placing fourth and eight to go with a 14th place in the 100m Backstroke.

Mia Fergie secured finals places for Nova Centurion and Sutton SC in the Girls 14 years 100m and 200m backstroke, placing fifth and seventh.

She also added overall 10th places in the 200m butterfly and 50m Freestyle.

Her Sutton SC and Nova Centurion team-mate, Ellis Malson claimed an eighth in the final of the girls 13 years 100m Backstroke and added an overall 25th to her weekend tally in the 200m backstroke event.

Chloe Quinn took two finals places for Sutton SC and Nova Centurion in the Girls 11/12 years-old 50m and 200m butterfly, placing eighth and fourth, adding two 14th places in the 200m freestyle and 100m Bbackstroke and a 24th overall in the 50m freestyle.

Completing the individual finals places for Nova Centurion was Sherwood Colliery SC’s Rebecca Flisher with a fifth place in the Girls 13 years-old 100m backstroke final and an overall ninth in the heats of the 200m event.

Other qualifiers an competitors included Nova Centurion and Sherwood Colliery SC’s Nicholas Meldrum, who took 16th in the Boys 11/12 years-old 100m freestyle, Abbie Scott, with a 20th in the 400m freestyle, 24th in the 200m freestyle and 22nd in the 50m freestyle.

Evie Timms was 11th in the 200m backstroke, 15th in the 100m backstroke and 13th in the 50m Freestyle.

Nova Centurion and Sutton SC were additionally represented by Nicola Peach, who took 24th in the Girls 13 years-old 200m butterfly, Jim Fergie, with a 12th in the boys 14 years-old 400m individual medley and 14th in the 100m butterfly and Kelsey Edwards, with a 17th in the boys 14 years 100m freestyle.

With the tough qualifying times compounded by the introduction of British Swimming’s ‘age as of 31st December’ competition standard, the quality of the swims at this year’s event was extremely high and all the events were littered with some fantastic performances.
