Mansfield and Ashfield’s ‘magnificent seven’ are among hundreds of swimmers from across the country set to compete in a new tournament this Christmas.
Hoping it will be a case of jingle bells all the way are Sherwood Colliery Swimming Club trio Lily Boseley, Natalee Meldrum and Jade Young, Mansfield Swimming Club duo Summer Kennedy and Rhys Taylor, Sutton Swimming Club’s Chloe Peach and, of course, Elliot Clogg, who now competes for City Of Sheffield.
They are all heading to the Ponds Forge International Sports Centre pool in Sheffield for the inaugural ASA National Winter Meet (25 metres), which looks sure to provide four days of fast, short-course racing.
Almost 1,000 swimmers are converging on the tournament, including a host of star names. At the forefront will be double world breaststroke champion and world record holder Adam Peaty, who has made the shortlist for the BBC TV Sports Personality of the Year award. Also there will be household names such as Liam Tancock, Michael Jamieson, Fran Halsall, Ben Proud and Aimee Wilmott.
Meden Academy pupil Clogg is one of British swimming’s stars to watch, and he will be looking to bring his fantastic short-course season to a successful close after setting national junior records in all three backstroke distances, as well as an English junior record in the 100m freestyle.
Boseley, the British 13-to-14-year-old 100m and 200m backstroke champion, will also be hoping for a good end to her prolific year, alongside Nova Centurion county squad teammates Meldrum and Young.
