Kirkby skater Jason Thomspon speaks of his delight after winning British Ice Skating Championship

KIRKBY ice skater Jason Thompson turned in a faultless display to be crowned the new British senior figure skating champion.

On-form Jason (22) wowed the judges to walkaway with the title at the British Ice Skating Championships at Ice Sheffield on Sunday.

Jason Thompson began skating aged 7 at the former Sutton Ice Rink before discovering he had a real talent for the sport aged 12.

Said Jason: “I am delighted to have won the title, it is one of the best achievements you can have in British skating.

“When I was a growing up it is a title I wanted to win, to have finally won it is a gret feeling.

“When I first started I really enjoyed skating, but once you start to compete you want to be the very best that you can and on Sunday that happened for me. It is a dream come true for me.”

Jason, who trains five days a week at Ice Sheffield, is currently competiting in Germany as part of his build up to the European qualifiers, which takes place in Sheffield early next year.

“I hope to qualify for the Europeans and the World Championships. I just have to keep training hard and working towards my goal.

“Training is hard but when you win titles like this it makes everything worthwhile.

“Sheffield has the very best facilities can offer so I am in the best place to help me get to my goal.

Jason is a former Ashfield Comprehensive student and currently works as a skating coach when he is not competiting on the rink.
