Gareth Godber wins first Open Singles table tennis title

Gareth Godber won his first Open Singles title during Mansfield District Table Tennis league’s annual tournament.

Godber beat seven times open champion Dean Brookes 7-11, 11-8, 11-6, 11-6 at Ravenshead Leisure Centre.

Tony Swain won the Division two singles Championship beating team mate Erlands Skels in 11-3, 11-9, 9-11, 7-11, 11-7 in a very close final.

Mick Pestka successfully defended his veteran crown after beating newcomer Jim Westwood in the final (11-5, 11-3, 11-5).

Dean Brookes managed to soften the defeat in the Open Singles by partnering up with Bob Hume and beating the Open Singles champion Gareth Godber and the veterans champion Mick Pestka in the final of the Open Doubles.

Matt Williams and Glynn Payne beat Andy Bunting and Angela Brettell in a close final of the Division Two doubles, with Matt and Glynn coming back from 2-0 down to take the title 10-12, 9-11, 11-9, 12-10, 11-9.

This was the first annual championship both Matt and Glynn had played in and was a great debut pairing.

Also this year there was a cadet tournament to promote the local youngsters and the winner of the singles was Max Witherspooon, who beat Jack Kane 2-0 in the final.

The third place play-off went to Josh Kane who beat Bailee Huckle 2-1.

In the Cadets Doubles, a round robin event was won by Jonathan Heath and Jessica Melrose who never lost a game.

All Awards along with the league awards will all be presented at the presentation evening on Friday 24th April at the Summit Centre, Kirkby
