The Mansfield Woodhouse-based side were expecting a tough test for their third match of the Midland League, First Division season against an Outlaws side with strong links to the city’s universities.

But a young team full of ability and enthusiasm, spearheaded by Aldread, had prepared well and were in top form to take the bragging rights in a well-contested duel, played in pouring rain. Now they are looking forward to their first home game of the campaign against much-improved Derby City at Debdale Park on Sunday, June 4.

Wolf Hunt took time to adapt to the tactics adopted by Outlaws, who bossed the first 20 minutes and went in front. But they responded with Aldread’s first try as he collected a loose pass and went through three defenders, and it wasn’t long before he was on the scoresheet again as he raced 60 metres to go under the posts after good work by Mikey Wallis.

Wallis himself was next to score, from a pass by hooker Matt Upton, before Outlaws finished the first half strongly to pull it back to 18-10 through stalwart Ollie Crick.

A try from Joe Ducker had Wolf Hunt’s tails up again at the start of the second period, and further scores from Aldread and Upton put them firmly in command. Outlaws did hit back late on with a brace of tries, but the day belonged to coach Glenn Holt’s team, whose man-of-the-match accolade went to second-rower Anthony Symcox for a superb defensive display.
