FARNSFIELD racer Jon Mortimer had a weekend of mixed luck at Brands Hatch as he went there with a six point advantage in the Avon Tyres Caterham Tracksport Championship after a fantastic weekend three weeks ago at Donington Park.
On Saturday he had a fantastic qualifying session putting him on pole for race one, at the Brands Hatch Indy Circuit.
Qualifying was so close that the top 16 positioned cars were split by only 0.7th of a second
Mortimer led for the first half of race one before his tyres went off massively, leading to handling issues.
But he managed to keep to second place until he had contact with the car in front who missed a gear coming out of Druids, resulting in Mortimer sustaining a holed radiator and loss of power.
Shortly afterwards he got a tap in a racing incident that span the car three laps before the end of the race.
But he continued the race and fought back up the field to finish a respectable seventh place.
In race two he started in seventh position and within the first lap gained sixth place until mid race when he was on the outside of Paddock Hill and the car on the inside out braked himself and put himself and Mortimer into the gravel trap, Jon managed to get out of the gravel trap and finished 12th.
So a mixed weekend for Mortimer and the first time this season he has failed to finish on the podium.
This has dropped him to second in the Championship to fellow racer David Robinson from High Wycombe who now has a 10 point lead.
Jon after the weekend commented “ a frustrating weekend and non of it my fault, but that’s motorsport.”
Mortimer looks forward to the next round in five weeks time at Nurburgring, Germany for the Caterham Eurofest race meeting on 28th and 29th July 2012.
