Expanding Mansfield Boxing Club look for next generation of coaches

BOXING stars from across the region recently enjoyed an inter-club sparring day, as Mansfield Amateur Boxing Club hosted the event for the first time in 2012.

Competitors from several amateur boxing clubs took it in turns to move around the ring and trade punches with opponents at the Body & Soul gym, Mansfield ABC’s recently refurbished headquarters.

Young boxers of various experience stepped between the ropes to challenge their counterparts, learn new skills and develop their own techniques.

In the pick of the action, Mansfield’s young starlet Nico Leivars, who was recently crowned Schoolboys champion, put his impressive skills to the test against Midlands champion Jake Morgan.

And the pair enjoyed an entertaining, extremely close contest with both landing accurate punches.

With the day attracting large numbers and proving to be a great success, Mansfield ABC are now planning to host more sparring events over the next 12 months and hope to see amateur teams from even further afield attending.

The future looks promising for the club, which was recently re-affiliated with the Amateur Boxing Association.

To aid their determination to make a fresh start to life, the team of boxers now has a new look gym in which to do their training.

Owned by Roger Brotherhood, a former top amateur and professional boxer, the Body & Soul gym has been redecorated and has a new running/tyre flipping track around the boxing ring so members can work on their strength and fitness.

And there are plans to soon add another boxing ring so, when busy, more boxers can spar.

Since its inception almost five years ago, Mansfield ABC has represented the town all over the country, and the club has also hosted its own shows at various venues, including Mansfield Civic Centre and Kissingate Leisure Centre in Shirebrook.

The club are now looking for boxing enthusiasts to volunteer as coaches. The club will train individuals up and, if desired, send them on official ABA coaching courses.

For those that are interested in learning boxing, training at the Body & Soul gym takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays 6-7pm for everyone over eight years of age, and 7-8pm for more advanced boxers. Conditioning training is on Mondays and Wednesdays, 6-7pm.
