Dean Brookes won his third consecutive Autumn Cup title, and his sixth in total, late on Monday evening beating his Zygabyte A teammate Joe Zygadlo in the final (11-6, 11-4).
The Autumn Cup is the Mansfield & District Table Tennis league’s annual curtain-raiser held at Ravenshead Leisure Centre and had a bumper 27 participants which included five new players to the league this year.
The Group Stages, due to the numbers, didn’t finish until 10.30pm, with the tournament not ending until 11.30pm.
Group A – Dean Brookes won all his games and topped the group, with Zak Melrose coming second.
Group B – Joe Zygadlo won all his games and topped the group with Pete Hodgson coming second, however due to the lateness of the night, Pete forfeited his place in the Quarters and this was took by 3rd Place Andy Brown a new player to the Mansfield League.
Group C – This was the only group of 6 and in a tight affair, Amber Zygadlo topped the group and Division 2 player Tony Swain surprisingly came second.
Group D – Andy Thorley won all his games and topped the group, with Richard Robinson coming second.
The quarter-finals went to form with Dean, Joe, Amber and Andy all progressing.
However, the two Division Two players both took their Division One opponents the distance; Tony Swain losing 2-1 Dean Brookes and Andy Brown losing 2-1 to Andy Thorley in a fantastic close battle.
The semi-finals saw father and daughter, Joe and Amber, paired against each other and as Amber narrowly lost the first game and then easily won the second, it looked like she would get one over her dad.
However, Joe had other ideas and managed to find something and win the decider.
In the other semi-final Dean Brookes beat Andy Thorley 2-0.
The late night final took place between two team mates with Dean Brookes being victorious with an 11-6, 11-4 win to take the title.
